Antec Smartpower SP-400

Do not buy this PSU. I have had weird intermittent power problems for months (have to disconnect all of my USB peripherals and Ethernet or else my system won't come online.) Today my Antec SP-400 PSU has finally bit the dust. I did some Googling to see if anyone else had had these problems, you know, because then I can take my time machine back and get a different PSU for my computer before the failure occurred.

Here are some of the highlights:

  • On mine the 5v rail went wobbly & USB devices (including tuners) went troppo & caused BSODs.

  • my antec died just after being a month old.

  • had a terrible time a few yrs ago where I had around 5 HDDs die on me over a period of a few months. ... after going through absolutely everything the culprit turns out to be the Antec SmartPower 450w

  • I feel for you because a similar thing happened to me 18 months ago. I managed to trash five successive HDDs before I realised that a faulty PS was zapping them.

Hmm, must be something about 5 HDDs that makes a sysadmin take notice...

PragProg Paper+Paperless Book Combos Cost Too Much

An open letter to The Pragmatic Programmers, LLC..

I'm buying a book on your website right now.

It's a little gross that the ebook variety is not free when purchasing a paper copy of the book.

If I did not want a paper copy, I would save 36% of the cost of a paper copy.

But if I live in the 21st century and want my books to be have a search function, I would have to pay 48% more to get the ebook+paperbook bundle.

I want a paper copy, so the price hike I experience for a search function will be 20%.

20% is staggering. Coming from an outfit claiming to know about programming, I find it pretty unbelievable that you can really justify this extra 20%. What are you guys doing over there? Scanning each page of a paper copy on a flat bed? Get real.

Maybe I'll just read the online documentation for free.

Jerks.

(Oh, this is the book I wanted.)

The Definitive ANTLR Reference

Sincerely,
Donny Viszneki.

Game evolves neural networks to drive weapon particle systems. I've had this idea, but I'm more interested in applying it to other aspects of the game. Applying it to weapons is definitely super cool, though!
